WEST COVINA MAYOR MEETS FUTURE LEADERS AT HOLLINGWORTH:
In Social Studies the Second Grade classes at Hollingworth Elementary worked on the unit “Governing the People.” Hollingworth Teacher Stephanie McCallie shared, “As we were studying community and state governments, each class created their own community. We discussed the three parts of government within a city, which include the mayor, council, and judge. Each child in each class ran for mayor of their city and designed an advertisement poster. They wrote their own speech in class and presented it to their classroom, persuading the audience why they should be mayor of their city. One mayor per class was chosen to represent their class city. At the end of the unit, we had an assembly with Mayor Steve Herfert of West Covina (pictured with students). He addressed the second grade students, said a few remarks about his job, and then opened up the rest of the time for questions and answers from the students. The 2nd grade winners for mayor read their speeches and had the opportunity to take a picture with the mayor. We had a wonderful time being an active part of this assembly and meeting the mayor.”
